Why Fences Matter for Developmental Disabilities

Peace of Mind for Your Family Members

Wandering is common & dangerous and puts tremendous stress on families.

People of all ages with Developmental Disabilities, Autism, Brian Injuries, Alzheimer's & Dementia, Sensory Impairment, can all have wandering tendencies.

Elopement - What is it?

Elopement is defined by the National Autism Society as "a dependent person leaving a safe, supervised space." refers to an individual, especially a child, wandering away from a safe, supervised environment.

Wandering by children with autism is common, which can be dangerous due to potential risks of injury or getting lost.

When wandering occurs kids get lost and are exposed to dangers they don’t see or understand.

Many autistic people have no sense of danger, it can be fatal under the worst circumstances.

According to the AWAARE Collaboration, a division of the National Autism Association that helps prevent elopement, about half of all kids with autism engage in wandering.  49% of Parents of children with cognitive impairments reported their child had run away or attempted to run away after the age of 4, of those 26% were missing long enough to cause concern - according to PEDIATRICS.

Touch Grass!

Spending time outside can be wonderful sensory exposure, help loved ones get exercise, and use outside sessions for occupational therapy.

Fence Design Tips for Elopement Prevention

Full Height Fence

We recommend at least 6' tall fence in order to limit sight lines that can cause distractions.

Most cities allow 6' fence, some allow taller fences with a Permit, or taller side-yard fences.

Variances can be pursued if your child's needs do not align with local building or HOA codes.

Reducing Street Visibility

Reducing visibility to potential distractors off-property is imperative.

Whether your material is vinyl fence panels or wooden pickets, limiting distractions is a must.

Locking Gate Hardware & Reducing Number of Gates

Gates are potential weak points in your fence & prime spots to be challenged for wandering.

We recommend a Surface Mounted Security Gate Lock with push-button number code on both sides.

Driveway Gates

Driveways & Garages are a major security consideration in a Wandering Reduction project.

Hinged Gates, Sliding Gates, Electric Hardware are all items to consider.

Garage code pads inside the garage to open the overhead door vs a common opener button.

Alarm & Security Systems, Cameras, Wearable GPS Tracking, ID Cards

Technology can help alert & track for both in-home and exterior wandering & elopement.
